Texas Bowlus: ‘Theres no doubt’ bowlus will stay
Texas Bowluses chief of staff, Randy Williams, said Thursday the Big 12 will not seek to extend the Big East championship game beyond next season.
“The Big 12 wants to have that championship game in 2022,” Williams said.
“If they want to have the championship game again in 2022, that’s what we’re going to have to do.”
Bowlus also said the Big 10 is exploring an extension of the conference championship game that began in 2011, adding that conference officials are working closely with the league on a potential resolution.
“We’re trying to do everything we can to make sure that this is done right, and we’re doing everything we possibly can to get that done,” Williams told Fox Sports Radio in Dallas.
The Big East and Big 12 were set to play the championship and the Orange Bowl at the same time in 2020 and 2021.
Bowls top officials said the two sides will have a meeting in the coming days to discuss the possibility of a Big 12 championship game.
Williams and commissioner Bob Bowls other top officials, including presidents of the presidents of all four conferences, have said the conference should have its own championship game, with a minimum of two teams from each conference competing.
BCS commissioners were scheduled to meet Thursday to consider extending the league championship to 2022.
“If we do have that, then we will be looking at how we can get that into 2022,” Bowls said.
