When will the road closures be lifted?
Louisiana roads have reopened for some of the state’s most popular weekend road races.
Louisiana State Police say the roads are expected to be closed until around 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
John Bel Edwards said Friday morning that the road closure is not connected to any road closures planned in other states.
The governor said the road restrictions are in response to the flood that has devastated parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley.
The flooding was caused by the powerful Hurricane Harvey.
Officials in Louisiana say the flood waters have exceeded the state of Mississippi’s capacity to control.
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said on Friday that he is “absolutely devastated” by the flooding and the fact that so many lives are at risk.
“This is a tragedy of the highest order,” Fischer said in a statement.
I want to reiterate that there is no threat to public safety and we will continue to protect our citizens.”
